Position Summary:

Under administrative direction, use extensive knowledge and skills obtained through education and experience to administer and manage complex database systems. This includes creating, managing, and monitoring performance and tuning databases; data warehousing designs; data architectures; and capacity planning.

Candidate will have extensive contact with internal customers and other information technology (IT) professionals and is required to identify, research, analyze and resolve database issues and problems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure high availability, security, and integrity of assigned databases
  • Resolve database performance, capacity, replication, and other distributed data issues
  • Install and configure database management software (DBMS) and applicable service packs and/or patches
  • Develop and implement database maintenance plans, including performing integrity checks, updating statistics, and monitoring security and hardware resource utilization
  • Establish regular backups of databases and transaction logs
  • Manage logins and user accounts, including assigning database object permissions and ancillary privileges
  • Schedule and manage jobs for data transfers and sundry procedures; and monitors performance and impact on operations
  • Database installation, upgrade, patch, configuration, backup and maintenance
  • Develop scripts to automate routine and repetitive database administration tasks
  • Create/tune/optimize indexes, stored procedures, DTS/SSIS packages and SQL jobs
  • Analyze long-term database performance trends to optimize database and application performance
  • Configure, support and optimize replication
  • Emergency restore requests for production issues
  • Liaison and collaborate with Network Operations on projects involving all facets of the SQL servers (backups, retention period review, upgrades, updates, configuration changes)
  • Provide after-hours support for SQL server alerting (i.e. resource crashes, severity 20, critical SQL job failures)
  • DEV and QA data refresh from production
  • Available to contribute to after-hours maintenance and/or deployments
  • Improve monitoring and administrative monitoring for the SQL server environment
  • Manage permissions so that QA and DEV can have the minimum privileges and yet be able to function on new project testing
  • Proactively review the SQL systems for defects or improvements
  • Provides at-the-time investigations of performance issues (blocking, excessive resource consumption)
  • Determine causes of free space consumption (log or data file growth, extraneous files, new databases)
  • Available during non-business hours to resolve system issues as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • 3+ years of experience in a database administration role
  • 5+ years working with MS SQL server 2005 – 2016
  • Designing/developing tables, stored procedures, functions, queries, views, and SSIS packages
  • Ability to work well individually and with a team
  • Proven record of delivering quality work on schedule
  • Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail
  • Able to concurrently work on multiple projects
  • Ability to understand the needs of the business and prioritize workload appropriately

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • This position is in a typical office environment which requires prolonged sitting in front of a computer
  • Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office equipment including operation of standard computer and phone equipment
  • May have occasional high stress when dealing with customers/clients
