Position Purpose:

The Director, Payroll leads the timely and accurate delivery of payroll services and is responsible for maintaining the organization’s payroll system and related technologies. This position is responsible for overseeing the input and integrity of all pay-related data, as well as ensures that local, state and federal compliance requirements are met. The Director, Payroll establishes and maintains tax reporting procedures. Further, this position manages a staff of payroll associates and establishes customer service and productivity performance metrics and goals.


  • Oversee consistent and timely company-wide payroll operations and ensures compliance with applicable tax and wage/hour laws
  • Responsible for production of W-2 Forms and related year-end reporting
  • Manage employee pay-related issues, which include overpayments, late pay, deductions, and related pay adjustments
  • Set goals and determine priorities for the Payroll department
  • Manage team of payroll associates, which includes hiring, assigning work, evaluating performance and providing opportunities for staff development and recognition
  • Serve as functional business owner of the payroll system
  • Maintain a high level of understanding of best-in-class operations through continuing education, benchmarking, and forming cross-functional partnerships
  • Identify business improvement opportunities, system enhancements and reports to improve payroll accuracy, efficiency, and customer service
  • Develop, implement, and maintain payroll procedures and controls
  • Identify potential payroll risks and take action to mitigate such risks
  • Develop reporting tools and solutions to ensure appropriate financial information is made available to associates and management in a timely manner, including reports detailing gross payroll, hours worked, leave accruals, benefits and tax deductions, etc.
  • Facilitate cross-functional relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as Legal, OE, Information Technology, and other departments
  • Interface with OE and IT and provide recommendations and direction to Payroll/IT/HRIS steering committee
  • Partner with IT team on full system implementation life cycle (i.e. overall project objectives and scope, requirements, design, testing, implementation plans, and project plan development of deliverables, milestones, costs, and resources)
  • Provide project planning, project management and execution
  • Maintain awareness of trends in PeopleSoft and other payroll/timekeeping software enhancements
  • Manage payroll operating budget including planning, budgeting and forecasting payroll needs and applications
  • Solicit feedback and identify requirements of payroll end users, prepare and distribute timely payroll communication
  • Handle appeals, issues and high level questions
  • Maintain liaison and smooth processes with internal customers and Accounting, Legal, ASC, Staffing, OE, etc.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting or a related field preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible payroll experience
  • Three to five years management experience


  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) Certification
