Talent Acquisition Specialist Job Description: Duties, Skills, & Qualifications

What Does a Talent Acquisition Specialist Do?

A talent acquisition specialist manages hiring for an employer from the inside: writing and posting job descriptions, sourcing and screening applicants, scheduling interviews, coordinating with hiring managers, and extending offers. The role sits in the human resources department of mid-size and large companies, hospitals, school districts, and government agencies. A specialist usually handles 10 to 25 open positions at a time and owns the applicant tracking system (ATS) records for each one. Most employers require a bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or a related field and 2 or more years of recruiting or HR experience.

The title overlaps with several others on this site, and the distinctions are about scope and employer. A recruiter is the broad term and can mean an in-house or agency position. A corporate recruiter is the in-house version, and most companies use that title and talent acquisition specialist interchangeably; the specialist title tends to include more process and compliance work, such as requisition approval, EEO reporting, and onboarding handoff. A sourcing specialist finds and engages candidates but does not screen, interview, or extend offers. A recruiting manager leads the team and sets hiring strategy.

Hiring a Talent Acquisition Specialist: What to Expect

Candidates for this title come from HR coordinator and generalist roles, agency recruiting, university career services, and staffing coordination in healthcare or hospitality. Screen for the kinds of roles the candidate has filled (hourly, professional, clinical, or technical) and in what volume, for how they handle a hiring manager who keeps rejecting qualified people, and for which ATS they have configured and reported from, since most recruiters have only used one as an end user. Ask for their time-to-fill and offer acceptance figures from the last year; an in-house recruiter who tracks those numbers will have them ready.

Talent acquisition postings often go wrong by asking for full-cycle ownership while describing a coordinator’s duties and pay. If the person will own requisitions from intake through offer, say so and set compensation for that level. If the job is mainly scheduling, posting, and ATS administration in support of senior recruiters, post it as a recruiting coordinator. Mixing the two produces applicants at both levels and wastes everyone’s time, including the hiring manager’s.

A posting for this role should name the ATS and the AI screening, scheduling, and messaging tools the specialist will configure and monitor. It should also state the typical applicant volume per requisition, since many job seekers apply with AI tools at scale and filtering applications takes a large share of the week.

On HR searches, 4 Corner Resources submits qualified candidates in an average of 3 days, clients interview an average of 1.48 candidates per hire, and we submit 1.79 candidates per hire.
