What Does a Marketing Director Do?
A marketing director sets the marketing plan for a company or business unit, owns the budget, leads the team that executes it, and answers for the results in pipeline, revenue, or enrollment. The director decides which channels get funded, hires and manages the managers and specialists who do the work, and reports performance to the executive team. Marketing directors work at software companies, consumer brands, health systems, professional services firms, and nonprofits. Most employers require a bachelor’s degree in marketing or business and 8 or more years of marketing experience, including 3 or more managing people.
The title gets confused with the levels above and below it and with two specialist roles. A marketing manager executes campaigns and manages a channel or a small team, usually inside a plan someone else set. A chief marketing officer sits on the executive team and owns company-level growth strategy, brand, and often sales alignment; at a company with no CMO, the marketing director reports to the CEO and does part of that job. A digital marketing manager manages paid, search, email, and web programs, and a brand manager owns positioning and the health of a product line or brand. The director usually manages both of those people.

Hiring a Marketing Director: What to Expect
Candidates come from senior marketing manager roles, agency account or strategy leadership, and sometimes from product marketing or demand generation leadership at larger companies. Screen for a budget the candidate owned and what they cut or shifted when results came in, for a team they built and how many of those people they promoted, and for how they measured marketing’s contribution to revenue at their last company. A candidate who talks about campaigns and creative without mentioning pipeline, cost per lead, or customer acquisition cost has probably been a strong manager and is not yet a director.
Many marketing director postings go wrong by combining a strategist’s title with a hands-on specialist’s duty list: build the website, write the blog, manage the ad accounts, and lead the team. Candidates read that as a one-person department with a director’s title and a manager’s salary, and the strong ones pass. State the size of the team and budget, say which functions are in-house and which are outsourced, and name the number the director will be judged on (pipeline, revenue, enrollment, or donations).
A posting for this role should name the number the director answers for, such as pipeline, revenue, enrollment, or donations, and the attribution reporting finance expects. It should also state the team size and the AI tools the team uses, and list strategy, measurement, and quality review of the team’s work as the main duties.
