What Does a Customer Service Representative Do?
A customer service representative answers customer questions, resolves complaints, processes orders and returns, and records each interaction in the company’s CRM or ticketing system. Representatives work by phone, email, chat, and text, in a call center, a retail or branch location, or from home. The title appears in nearly every industry: retail and e-commerce, banking and insurance, software, utilities, healthcare, and logistics. Most employers require a high school diploma or equivalent, and many ask for 1 or more years of customer-facing experience; the rest train from scratch.
This is the general title, and several narrower versions of it have their own pages. An inbound customer service representative only takes calls and messages that customers start. An outbound customer service representative places calls for follow-up, retention, collections, or surveys. A healthcare customer care representative handles patients, members, and providers under HIPAA rules. A call center representative works a high-volume phone queue with measured handle time. Post the general title when the job mixes channels and tasks or when the posting covers several teams; post a variant when the work is one channel, one direction, or one regulated setting, because the narrower title draws people who already know they like that work.

Hiring a Customer Service Representative: What to Expect
Candidates come from retail, restaurants, hospitality, other call centers, and school or military service, and most employers hire on temperament and train the product knowledge. Screen for how the candidate handled a customer who was wrong and angry, for typing speed and written clarity if chat or email is part of the job, and for schedule reliability, since attendance is the most common reason a new representative does not last 90 days. A short mock call during the interview tells you more than the resume.
Customer service postings tend to leave out the schedule, the pay, and the volume. Candidates for this job compare postings on exactly those three things, and a listing without them gets skipped. State the shift and whether weekends are included, give the hourly rate or range, say roughly how many contacts a representative handles per day, and name the channels (phone only, or phone plus chat and email). Specifics reduce the no-shows at the first interview.
A posting for this role should list the contacts that reach a representative, such as billing disputes, damaged shipments, policy exceptions, and upset customers, because chatbots and self-service portals handle order status, password resets, and store hours. It should also name every channel the representative covers in a shift and the AI tools on the agent desktop, such as suggested replies and automatic call summaries.
On call center and customer service searches, 4 Corner Resources submits qualified candidates in an average of 1.9 days, clients interview an average of 1.55 candidates per hire, and we submit 1.87 candidates per hire.

- Answer inbound calls, emails, chats, and text messages and resolve questions about orders, accounts, billing, products, and services, including the disputes and exceptions that self-service tools cannot settle
- Process orders, returns, exchanges, refunds, and account changes in the order management or billing system

- Follow up on open cases by phone or email until the customer confirms resolution
