UX Researcher Job Description: Duties, Skills, & Qualifications

What Does a UX Researcher Do?

A UX researcher studies how people use a product and turns what they learn into decisions the product team can act on. The work includes planning studies, recruiting participants, conducting interviews and usability tests, analyzing survey and product usage data, and presenting findings to designers, product managers, and executives. UX researchers work at software companies, banks, retailers, healthcare organizations, and agencies, and most belong to a product or design team. Employers typically require a bachelor’s degree in psychology, human-computer interaction, anthropology, or a related field and 2 or more years of applied research experience.

The role is distinct from three others it works beside. A UX designer designs the flows and screens, and may do light research when no researcher is on the team. A UI designer handles the visual layer: layout, type, color, and components. A product manager decides what to build and uses the researcher’s findings to make that call. The researcher is the person who can say, with evidence, why users do what they do and which design decision the team should test next.

Hiring a UX Researcher: What to Expect

Candidates come from graduate programs in human-computer interaction, psychology, and anthropology, from market research and analytics roles, and from UX design when a designer has moved toward research. Screen for a study the candidate planned and led end to end, including how they recruited participants and what the team changed because of the findings; a portfolio that stops at the report is a warning sign. Ask how they chose between a qualitative and a quantitative method on a recent project, and ask what they do with AI-generated session summaries before sharing them, because a good researcher checks the tags and quotes against the recording.

Many UX researcher postings list every research method and ask for 5 or more years with each. The posting reads as if the employer does not know what research it needs. Name the product, say how many teams the researcher supports, say whether a research operations function exists or the researcher recruits and schedules alone, and list the 3 or 4 methods the first year will use most. Candidates with real experience can tell the difference and respond to the specific version.

A posting for this role should describe a mixed-methods researcher who conducts interviews and usability tests, designs and analyzes surveys, and pulls behavioral data from analytics tools. It should also name the AI-assisted tools the team uses for transcription, tagging, and synthesis, state how many product teams the researcher supports, and say whether the job includes teaching designers and product managers to conduct basic research.

UX Researcher Core Responsibilities

  • Plan research studies with product managers and designers, define the questions to answer, and choose the method that fits the question and timeline
  • Recruit and screen participants through tools such as User Interviews, Respondent, or an internal panel, and manage incentives and consent
  • Conduct user interviews, moderated and unmoderated usability tests, card sorts, and diary studies
  • Study how users respond to AI features in the product, including trust, accuracy, and recovery from wrong answers
  • Design, field, and analyze surveys in Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, or Typeform, including sampling and basic statistics
  • Analyze product usage data in Amplitude, Mixpanel, Pendo, or Google Analytics 4 to size problems and choose what to study
  • Synthesize findings with AI-assisted tools such as Dovetail, Marvin, or Condens, verify the output against source recordings, and tag insights in a shared repository
  • Confirm that any AI transcription or synthesis tool used on sessions is approved for participant data under the company’s privacy policy
  • Present findings and recommendations to product teams and leadership in formats they will act on: short readouts, highlight reels, and prioritized issue lists
  • Maintain the research repository so findings from past studies are easy to find and reuse
  • Coach designers and product managers on lightweight research methods they can conduct themselves
  • Track whether research recommendations shipped and what changed in the metrics afterward
  • Follow privacy, consent, and data handling rules for participant data

Required Skills and Qualifications

Hard skills

  • 2 or more years conducting applied user research for digital products
  • Experience with both qualitative methods (interviews, usability testing, contextual inquiry) and quantitative methods (surveys, behavioral analytics, basic statistics)
  • Hands-on use of testing platforms such as UserTesting, Maze, Lookback, or dscout
  • Survey design and analysis, including sampling, question design, and significance testing
  • Working knowledge of product analytics tools such as Amplitude, Mixpanel, or Google Analytics 4, and the ability to write a simple SQL query
  • Experience with a research repository and AI-assisted synthesis tool such as Dovetail or Marvin
  • Experience researching AI-powered product features, such as chat assistants and AI-generated recommendations
  • Familiarity with Figma well enough to test prototypes and annotate findings
  • Strong writing and presentation skills for readouts to nontechnical audiences

Soft skills

  • Curiosity that does not stop at the first explanation a participant offers
  • Neutrality in the room, so participants are not led toward the answer the team wants
  • Willingness to deliver findings the product team did not want to hear
  • Prioritization, since requests for research always exceed the time available
  • Comfort being the only researcher in a meeting of designers and engineers

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in human-computer interaction, psychology, cognitive science, anthropology, sociology, or a related field
  • Many employers prefer a master’s degree in HCI or a research-heavy social science

Certifications

  • None required. The Nielsen Norman Group UX Certification with a research specialty and the Interaction Design Foundation user research courses are familiar to hiring managers but rarely decide a hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting 2 or more product teams at once as the sole researcher
  • Background in the employer’s domain, such as healthcare, financial services, or enterprise software
  • Experience building or improving a research operations process: recruiting panels, consent templates, and repository structure
  • Advanced quantitative skills, including R or Python for survey analysis or experiment design
  • Accessibility research experience with participants who use assistive technology
  • Experience designing or evaluating A/B tests with a product analytics or experimentation team
