Q4 2026 Employee Mindset Survey shows six-figure earners pulling ahead while lower earners lose confidence and AI anxiety rises among top earners and leaders
ORLANDO, FL, 2026 – A quarterly survey of 754 employed Americans by 4 Corner Resources found that worker sentiment ended 2026 where it began, but the workforce underneath the number moved in opposite directions. The Employee Mindset Score, which tracks how U.S. workers feel about their jobs, their market prospects, and AI, finished the year at 67.7 out of 100, within a tenth of a point of January’s 67.8.
Six-figure earners rebuilt their savings and grew more confident in the job market, while workers with household incomes of $50,000 to $79,999 grew more pessimistic, and over half still cannot cover 4 months without a paycheck. AI anxiety also moved up the ladder: 30.2% of workers earning $150,000 or more now name AI as the biggest threat to their job, more than double January’s share. Key Findings
- Employee Mindset Score: 67.7, up 0.4 from Q3 and within a tenth of a point of January’s 67.8. The year ended where it began on average, with the movement concentrated in specific groups.
- Market pessimism grew among lower earners: 23.0% of workers with household incomes of $50,000 to $79,999 are unconfident about the job market’s next 6 to 12 months, up from 13.1% in January. Among workers earning $100,000 or more, the share held at 16.4%.
- Savings recovered unevenly: 42.3% of workers cannot cover 4 months of expenses without a paycheck, the best reading of 2026. Among $100K+ earners the share fell from 37.1% in January to 28.6%; among $50K-79K earners it held at 52.1%.
- AI fear reached top earners: 30.2% of workers earning $150,000 or more now name AI as the biggest threat to their job, up from 12.6% in January. Managers, directors, and executives rose to 22.8%, while individual contributors held near 15%.
- 1 in 3 tech workers (33.0%) now call AI their biggest job threat, up from 20.6% in January. Technology Services posted an AI Threat Index of 45.0, the highest of any industry in 2026.
- Women are nearly twice as likely as men to expect AI to hurt their careers: 23.4% vs. 12.7%. In January, the two were even at about 16%.
- Job Satisfaction Index: 72.7 (up 1.1), the highest reading of the year. 86.3% of workers are satisfied with their employer, up from 81.1% in Q3.
- Workers are settling into the office: the share who prefer fully remote work fell from 29.9% to 24.3%, while the share required to work fully in-office rose every quarter, from 51.5% in January to 56.8%.
- Entry-level workers lost faith in the market: 30.2% are unconfident about the job market, more than double January’s 13.0%.
- AI Threat Index: 34.0 (up 1.4), the highest reading of 2026.
“On average, workers ended 2026 right where they started, but that average blends two groups moving in opposite directions. Six-figure earners rebuilt their savings and feel better about the job market. Workers earning under $80,000 feel worse about it, and more than half of them still couldn’t cover 4 months without a paycheck. AI anxiety moved up the ladder too, and nearly a third of top earners now call it the biggest threat to their job,” said Pete Newsome, President of 4 Corner Resources.
