What Does a Customer Success Manager Do?
A customer success manager owns the relationship with a set of existing customers after the sale and is measured on whether those customers renew, expand, and get the results they bought the product for. The role is standard at software and subscription companies and common at B2B services firms. A customer success manager leads onboarding, holds regular business reviews, tracks product adoption and health scores, and works renewal risk before it becomes a cancellation. Most employers ask for a bachelor’s degree and 2 or more years in customer success, account management, or support at a B2B company.
Employers mix this title up with three others. An account manager is a sales role: the person is paid on upsell and renewal revenue and often holds the commercial negotiation. A customer service manager leads a team of representatives who handle inbound questions and complaints. A support specialist resolves individual tickets. The customer success manager sits between them: responsible for the customer’s outcome over the life of the contract, usually without a direct sales quota, and working through a book of named accounts instead of a queue.

Hiring a Customer Success Manager: What to Expect
Candidates come from account management, implementation and onboarding roles, tier 2 support, and occasionally from the customer side as power users of a product. The best screening question separates retention ownership from ticket handling: ask the candidate to describe an account they saved from churning, what the warning signs were, who they involved, and what the renewal outcome was. A candidate who answers with support metrics (tickets closed, response time) has done a different job, however well. Also ask how they led a quarterly business review and what the customer’s executive sponsor took away from it.
A frequent problem in customer success manager postings is describing a support job under a success title because the company has not yet decided which one it needs. If the person will mainly answer inbound questions, post a support or customer service title and pay for that. If the person owns renewals and adoption for named accounts, say how many accounts, what the average contract value is, whether there is a quota or bonus tied to retention, and who handles the commercial negotiation. Candidates with real success experience read for those details and skip postings that leave them out.
A posting for this role should state whether the job has a number attached, such as a net revenue retention target or a share of expansion commission, because candidates sort themselves by that answer. It should also give the size of the book and name the tools that support it, such as health-score dashboards, automated onboarding, and AI-drafted check-ins.
