What Does a Senior Accountant Do?
A senior accountant owns the complex parts of the monthly close, reviews the work of staff accountants, and prepares the schedules that feed the financial statements and the audit. The role handles revenue, accruals, leases, intercompany, and technical reconciliations instead of routine entries. Senior accountants work in corporate accounting departments across every industry, from a single-entity company with 1 senior to a public company with dozens. Most employers require a bachelor’s degree in accounting and 3 to 6 years of experience, and many prefer a CPA or public accounting background.
Employers often use the title loosely. A staff accountant prepares assigned entries and reconciliations and sends them up for review; a senior accountant does the review, owns the harder accounts, and is the first person asked when a number looks wrong. An accounting manager supervises the senior and owns the close calendar and the team. A certified public accountant is a license, not a job level: many senior accountants hold one, and many good ones do not.

Hiring a Senior Accountant: What to Expect
Senior accountant candidates come from two places: staff accountants with 3 or more years who are ready to review instead of prepare, and public accounting seniors leaving audit after their second or third busy season. The public accounting group understands controls and documentation but may never have posted a journal entry in an ERP, so ask about hands-on close work. For either group, ask the candidate to describe a reconciliation they fixed, not one they prepared. The answer should name the account, the size and cause of the variance, and what they changed so it did not recur. A candidate who can only describe the process has not yet done senior-level work.
Many senior accountant postings list staff accountant duties with a higher years requirement. If the responsibilities say “prepare journal entries” and “reconcile bank accounts” and nothing about review, technical accounting, or audit ownership, experienced seniors will assume the title is inflated and pass. Name the accounts the senior will own and the people whose work they will review.
A posting for this role should list the close tools in use, such as FloQast, BlackLine, or NetSuite Account Reconciliation, and say whether the senior will own their setup. Owning them means building reconciliation templates, setting review rules, and clearing what the software flags. Candidates who have configured these tools will describe the rules they set, and candidates who have only used them will describe the screens.
