Do you enjoy getting to the heart of a topic? Are you an expert troubleshooter and instructor? A position as a Technical Writer might be the detail-oriented role that’s right for you. Technical Writers use their expertise to convey complex ideas and messages in clear, concise language that people from various backgrounds can understand. Technical Writers’ work may appear in instruction manuals, how-to guides, white papers, and “frequently asked questions” sections of websites. They may also be responsible for writing the company’s training materials, internal communications, informational brochures, product announcements, and more. A Technical Writer also ensures the consistency of content across departments and platforms. Technical Writers can incorporate visual elements such as photographs, diagrams, graphs, and charts to articulate an idea or message to the reader. They are excellent researchers, delving into a given industry to best understand how it (and its products) benefit the consumer.

Revit technicians typically work regular hours, 9 AM to 5 PM, though they sometimes might need to log more than 40 hours a week. Sometimes they will need to visit a construction site to collaborate with architects or engineers.

Available certifications

You have two weeks to complete the course covering the introduction material, construction documents, and detailing.

Career path

The first step to becoming a Revit technician is to earn a high school diploma or equivalent. Population growth means that construction-related jobs, and superintendents, in particular, will continue to be in demand. Maintenance, improvements, and construction of roads and bridges also will create more job opportunities. The emphasis on environmentally friendly development and energy efficiency should give the industry a boost as well.

Job prospects in the construction industry tend to ebb and flow with the economy. However, architects and engineers are taking on more tasks that previously were handled by drafters, which means fewer job opportunities. The Construction Management Association of America offers career coaching, a learning center, and job listings for candidates.
