Cost Accountant Job Description: Duties, Skills, & Qualifications

What Does a Cost Accountant Do?

A cost accountant calculates what it costs a company to make its products and explains why the actual cost differs from the plan. The role sets and maintains standard costs, analyzes material, labor, and overhead variances, values inventory, and reconciles the perpetual inventory system to the general ledger. Cost accountants work mostly in manufacturing, food and beverage, construction, and distribution, usually at a plant or division level. Most employers require a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and 2 or more years of cost or inventory accounting experience, often with a CMA or CPA preferred at the senior level.

It helps to compare this job with three related accounting roles. A staff accountant works the general ledger close and may touch inventory entries but does not own standards, bills of material, or variance analysis. A financial analyst builds budgets and forecasts from the cost data a cost accountant produces, and usually sits in FP&A instead of plant accounting. A controller owns the whole set of books and the controls around them; at many plants the cost accountant reports to a plant controller.

Hiring a Cost Accountant: What to Expect

Good cost accountants are scarcer than general ledger accountants, because the skill is learned inside a plant and most accounting programs barely cover it. Candidates usually come from other manufacturers, from plant-level staff accountant roles, or from public accounting firms with inventory-heavy clients. Screen for the physical side: ask the candidate to walk through how a bill of materials, a routing, and an overhead rate combine into a standard cost, and ask what they found the last time a variance turned out to be a bad standard instead of a bad month. A candidate who has never walked a production line will struggle in this role.

Many cost accountant postings go wrong by treating the title as a generic accountant with inventory added on. Postings that list bank reconciliations, accounts payable, and fixed assets first, and mention standard costing in passing, get applications from general ledger accountants who have never set a standard. Lead with standard costing, variance analysis, inventory valuation, and the ERP in use, and name the number of SKUs or product lines the person will cover.

A posting for this role should name the ERP that calculates standard costs and variances, such as SAP S/4HANA, Oracle, Epicor, or Microsoft Dynamics 365, and say whether the person will present variance results to operations and leadership. If tariffs or commodity prices drive large purchase price variances, the posting should say so. Candidates who have explained those swings to a plant team will recognize the job.
