The subheadline of a recent Atlantic article reads, “Young people are using ChatGPT to write their applications; HR is using AI to read them; no one is getting hired.”

Yes, young people (and plenty of older ones) use ChatGPT when applying for jobs. And yes, many HR systems use AI to filter them.

There’s no question that the job market has become a convoluted mess, but the culprit is the one-click-apply process. The biggest problem and source of frustration is volume.

AI is the cure.

You’re probably skeptical, and I get it. But bear with me as someone who’s been doing this since resumes were delivered in the mail (with cover letters!), and I’ll explain why.

Introducing Ruby

Ruby is our AI-powered recruiting assistant, built on Tenzo.ai technology. Tenzo was co-founded by CEO Mason Swofford, a Stanford-educated AI researcher whose previous work includes computer vision at NVIDIA and autonomous vehicle perception at Waymo. His co-founders share similar backgrounds; this is a team that spent years studying how machine learning models make decisions in truly life-or-death situations before applying that knowledge to recruiting.

We evaluated several platforms before choosing Tenzo. What separated them was the rigor around fairness, the structured approach to candidate evaluation, and the quality of the technology. 4CR has always adhered to the highest recruiting standards, so any tool we use needs to meet that same bar.

As Mason put it, “A resume only tells half the story. We built Tenzo so that all candidates have the opportunity to show who they are early in the process, allowing recruiters to spend their time where it actually matters: talking to the right people and building real relationships. The AI handles the volume; the humans handle the judgment.”

Ruby’s role is easy to describe:

  • She reviews resumes and interviews candidates to evaluate their qualifications against the specific requirements of the role.
  • She communicates via phone, text, and email, working around the clock and typically responding within minutes of receiving an application.
  • She answers basic questions about the position.
  • She schedules qualified candidates to speak with a recruiter.
  • Ruby also gives candidates a chance to go beyond their resume. The interviews offer an opportunity to provide context that an application doesn’t allow for.

Everything above is what happens when candidates appear to be a good fit, but one of Ruby’s best attributes is how she handles those who don’t. When an application doesn’t meet a position’s minimum requirements, she lets the candidate know where they fell short. In other words, no more waiting and wondering.

What Ruby does not do:

  • Ruby does not make hiring decisions.
  • She does not decide whether a candidate gets the job.
  • She does not send candidate profiles to our clients for consideration.

Every candidate who moves forward in our process speaks with a human recruiter who reviews their background, asks about their career goals and objectives, and ultimately decides whether to move forward.

What Changes for You

A recruiter reviewing 200 applications starts with full attention and loses it by number 120. The candidates who suffer the most are those with strong backgrounds buried somewhere in a crowded inbox. And, making matters worse for both qualified candidates and recruiters, due to one-click applications, most of the 200 won’t even meet the most basic requirements for the opening.

Ruby screens applications as they arrive, so qualified candidates surface immediately and can be scheduled with a recruiter the same day they apply. With the initial sorting handled, the 4CR team has more time for meaningful conversations that actually determine outcomes.

The Fairness Question

When candidates hear “AI screening,” the natural worry is that they’ll be filtered out before a human sees their application. The concern is understandable, but the process Ruby replaces is less objective than most people assume.

A recruiter reviewing hundreds of resumes develops shortcuts: familiar company names catch their eye, certain schools stand out, and formatting creates impressions that have nothing to do with qualifications. None of it is intentional; it’s how the brain manages overload.

Ruby evaluates every candidate against the same structured criteria every time. We chose Tenzo in part because the founders came out of AI research focused on eliminating bias in machine learning, and they built the platform with that principle at its core. The system undergoes regular bias audits by both internal teams and independent third parties, and Tenzo’s clients have reported more diverse hiring outcomes than with manual screening. It factored heavily into our decision.

What to Expect When You Apply

When you apply through 4 Corner Resources, Ruby may reach out with initial questions about the role, while sharing basic job details in return. If your qualifications align, she’ll schedule a deeper discussion with one of our recruiters. From there, the process moves the way it always has: with a recruiter who intimately knows the client and the role, and who will spend time getting to know you.

We’ve successfully placed nearly 20,000 professionals over 20 years. 4CR was founded to do business personally, and that hasn’t changed. Far from it, because with Ruby, we’re now able to do more of what we do best.
