Junior Architect/Designer

Job Description

Every building, no matter how large or small, is the result of a team of talented professionals working — often behind the scenes — to design and build it. One of these team members is the Junior Architect/Designer. 

Junior Architect/Designers typically work at architectural or engineering firms, using their talents to support various architectural projects. They work on many things, including helping prepare architectural plans and designs, assisting in essential presentations, and helping develop and finalize building plans.

The nature of their work is typically entirely collaborative, working as part of a team under the supervision of a Senior Architect or Lead Designer. 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with Architects assisting with various projects
  • Help to plan and design buildings
  • Work on design drawings
  • Assist in reviewing project proposals and specs
  • Help with compiling required paperwork and documents for projects
  • Help coordinate details of architectural projects

Education and Background

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in architecture, ideally with an internship or previous experience.

Skills and Proficiencies

  • Proficient in AutoCAD, SketchUp, and related software
  • Experience producing construction documents
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and time-management skills
  • Design and problem-solving skills as well as an appreciation of, and sensitivity to, architectural design intent
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite

Career Path

Often a new architect will begin at the Junior Architect/Designer level; through outstanding work, this fledgling architect can advance to Mid-level and Senior Architect. All architects need to earn a license from the licensing board of the state where they plan to practice. Other ways to stand out in the architecture field include further schooling beyond a bachelor’s degree and passing the Architect Registration Examination®, created to assess knowledge and skills in the practice of architecture.
