The primary responsibilities of this area include the design, deployment, upgrade, and support of Enterprise SQL Server database servers. The position also includes the support of Oracle servers. Some of the tasks include:

  • Design of the database software and hardware
  • Installation and configuration of database servers and failover clusters
  • Database version and service pack upgrades
  • Vendor database and process upgrades
  • Hardware and database performance monitoring with tools such as PerfMon, SQL Profiler, Idera Diagnostic Manager, CRON Scripts, Oracle Enterprise Manager, SQL Plus, SQL Server Management Console and Query Analyzer
  • Object, index and query optimization
  • Development of SQL Objects, SSIS packages, and automated processes
  • Implementation, configuration and support of high availability technologies such as log-shipping, SQL Server replication and Golden Gate replication
  • Implementation, configuration and support of backup processes for complete, differential and transaction log backups using native SQL tools, Idera compression tools and RMAN scripts
  • Complete RMAN duplicates, exports and imports
  • Implementation, configuration and support of database maintenance processes
  • Configuring security access for users and applications
  • Implementation, configuration and participation in disaster recovery systems, processes and tests

Technical Application Architecture: 

The Database Administrator is also very involved in the design of the Technical Application Architecture. It is common for the Database Administrator to work closely with the Application and Intel teams, as well as with vendors, in the design of the application architecture. Some of the tasks include:

  • Participate in design meetings and conference calls with the technical teams and the application vendor
  • Create architecture layout diagrams detailing proposed application architecture
  • Work with Microsoft, Oracle and other technology vendors in the discussion and planning of the software and hardware architecture that will be used to support vendor applications


  • Three years of experience with Relational Database Management Systems
  • Three years of experience developing enterprise-wide database solutions
  • Three years of experience with Microsoft operating systems
  • Three years of experience developing and delivering custom database systems solutions in an enterprise environment
  • Version Control Systems such as Microsoft Team Foundation Server, SourceGear Vault, CVS, Visual SourceSafe, or other comparable systems
  • Database tools and development environments such as AdeptSQL Diff, RedGate SQL Toolbelt, Microsoft Visual Studio for Database Administrators or Microsoft Business Intelligence Development Studio
  • Experience in discussing and planning application architecture with other technical teams and vendors
  • Be able to actively participate in the production on-call rotation
  • Must be able to work in a team environment as well as work independently
  • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally as well as in documentation to all levels of employees
  • Must posses excellent customer service skills in the function of all aspects of the position
