General Summary:

Under supervision, perform follow-up and collection procedures for accounts receivable.  Prepare appropriate accounts for referral to a collection agency.  Actively participate in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.  Adhere to the organization’s corporate compliance plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Use discretion when discussing personnel/patient related issues that are confidential in nature
  • Responsive to ever-changing matrix of business needs and acts accordingly
  • Typing skills equal to 35 words per minute
  • Proficiency in the performance of basic math functions
  • Communicate professionally and effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word
  • Strong analytical and research skills
  • Excellent knowledge of ICD, CPT, HCPS coding, and medical terminology
  • Thorough understanding of coordination of rules and calculations as it applies to healthcare
  • Accept the responsibility of serving as a liaison between patients and their insurance companies
  • Ability to work well with others of varying backgrounds

Knowledge and Skills Preferred:

  • Computer skills to include Web MD, Host, EPIC Practice Management system, and Microsoft Office

Education and Experience Required:

  • Two years of experience in Revenue Cycle department or related area (registration, finance, collections, customer service, contract management or medical claim processing)
  • At least one year experience in all lines of business, such as, HMO, PPO, Medicare, Medicaid, etc.

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • High School diploma or GED

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Establish payments and coordinates flow of self-pay accounts in a professional manner, utilizing regard for dignity of all patients and family members
  • Maintain or exceed monthly A/R department accountability
  • Provide weekly productivity reports to supervisor in a timely manner
  • Awareness of departmental changes, standards, and goals as disseminated in department meetings and comply successfully by completing assignments within designated timeframes
  • Gather required information needed on accounts that are found to have insurance, charity Medicaid, deceased, or write-offs in order to collect outstanding balances
  • Maintains or exceeds audit standards
  • Discuss self-pay accounts with family practice residency patients by answering telephone calls (within two business days), correspondence, or on-site assistance
  • Review and complete monthly billing credit indicator report and patient accounts and makes accurate decisions to determine a follow up procedure
  • Maintain written and dated records of collection activity on accounts
  • Document current information on account to maintain quality customer service
  • Facilitate smooth and efficient operation of department by being available and prepared to work during scheduled working hours and attending meetings as requested by management
  • Adhere to HIPAA regulations by verifying pertinent information to determine caller authorization level receiving information on account
